CLIENT TASK : Review and understand the Static Page process and then ...

  1. Supply a list of all static pages you will require and most importantly the initial text content for them through the collaborative. It does not have to be perfect as it can be edited by you at a later date, we just need to format it.
  2. Understand and follow the instruction per the 'Summary of Steps' for administering your static pages.

definition -- A LightSpeed static webpage is a page that you create using the web store administration panel. These pages usually include your PCI Compliance policies such as Privacy, Returns, Shipping and Terms & Conditions.

They can also be your About Us and individual lead-in pages per your primary level categories if your site design calls for it. AdVision will guide you to create as many static pages as necessary within the LightSpeed admin panel.

note -- Remember that not all of the static pages of your web site can be created here, but the majority can. AdVision will justify to you any reasoning if a static page needs to be outside of admin panels control.

Creating static pages within the LightSpeed web store admin panel will be done between you and AdVision in a few steps. The primary purpose of this multi step process, is to have you create your initial content and for AdVision to format your content so that it looks like it belongs within your web store and also to give you the necessary access to edit your pages as and when needed without AdVision's involvement in the future.

Summary of Steps

STEP 1 - Create your text content for the static pages that are within the site design using TextEdit.

STEP 2 - DELETE pages in your LIST view that are not going to LINK within your site and ADD any that are.

STEP 3 - Create the static pages in the LS web store admin pane (under PAGES)

STEP 4 - Send us the screenshot of the LIST view following the instructions below.

note -- Initially, as you create your static pages for the first time it is likely that the pages of text will appear quite plain and the fonts all wrong, this will be resolved by AdVision in step 5.

STEP 1 - Creating text content

Create a FOLDER on your Mac prepare content for your static pages and save your .txt files in this folder prior to creating your webpages.

Suggestion -- Create the text content for your pages in an application such as TextEdit. You will find this application on your Mac, and if you open it, across the top you will find the FORMAT menu, select PLAIN TEXT mode from within it.

 note -- By doing this, whatever you type into TextEdit - will be stripped of any font tags that you can pick up either by copying text directly from a website or using the WORD application to create your content. Effectively washing your fonts, will prevent any weird format issues later as you paste your text into the web store admin panel and therefore, don't add any font formatting in your txt files, no indentations, no bold or italic font styles or bullet lists.

note - The following images and movie(s) are from Web Store 2.0 and therefore there maybe some slight variations in screen images shown, but essentially you should see all of what is outlined.

STEP 2 - Setup the static pages within LightSpeed's web store admin panel

Go to -- Tools > eCommerce -- within your LightSpeed application -- the following images represents those panels:

Click as indicated to take you to the LIST views within in the admin panel - then select PAGES from the DropDown Menu.

When the LIST of PAGES shows, it is at this time, that you should delete any pages that are not relevant or seen in the design of your web store navigation.

example -- If you're not going to have TOP PRODUCTS or PROMOTIONS, as seen in the original LightSpeed templates, then delete those pages from this list. You only want to have pages listed here that are linked within your new design.

ADDING new webpages, can be done from this view by clicking on the bottom bar as shown above.

STEP 3 - ADDING OR EDITING YOUR STATIC WEB PAGES

While looking at the LIST view of static pages within LightSpeed web store admin panel, click EDIT on any one specific page and that will take you to the view below

PAGE KEY - The first item that you will need to enter is the page KEY. This will be the actual name of the file example - 'about' would have a file name like about.html. When you enter the page KEY, it is important that you have all letters in lower case and preferably a single word.

You can have a two word filename, but use an underscore between the words eg: file_name. Finally do not enter an extension like .html or .php at the end of your page KEY as the functionality of the web store needs to do that.

PAGE TITLE - Enter a page TITLE, that is relevant to the content of this page. Entering the TITLE in Title Case (Mixed Capitalization) is recommended. eg: About ABC Company

LARGE BOX AREA - COPY and PASTE your new text from TextEdit into the large box seen in this panel. When you first do this, please make sure that you 'cannot' see all of the little icons in rows above the large box. You can toggle these icons on or off by clicking on the little i - icon as seen in the view.

note -- Below the LARGE BOX AREA - are three more fields to enter content. Ignore the SLIDESHOW PRODUCT TAG - as we will adivse you if that is necessary for any one specific page at a later date. We will be sending you in STEP 5 the KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTIONS, (if applicable) but at this time in the initial steps, you can leave these three fields blank. resolving -- Once you have setup your static pages in this panel and SAVED, you should be able to resolve to them to check to see they are working. Depending on the type of hosting setup, the actual URL to resolve to maybe slightly different. Please test these pages are resolving and let AdVision know if you experience any issues.

Your page URL will be the result of the title of the page. As an example if your PAGE KEY is "About" but your PAGE TITLE is "About Us" the resulting URL is going to be "http://example.com/about-us", not "http://example.com/about".

nameofyoururl.com/about.html - or - nameofyoururl.com/index?cpage=about

....where nameofyoururl is noted this would be the URL to your web store. This might be at your www domain, or set up as a 'sub domain'...

www.nameofyoururl.com/shop - or - shop.nameofyoururl.com

STEP 4 - Send AdVision your LIST of pages

Once you have created all your static pages - go back to the list view of static pages in the LS web store admin panel and take a screenshot [Shift - Apple - 4].

Your mouse will turn into a crosshair, move mouse to the top left of area you wish to screen capture, hold down your mouse button and drag to the bottom right of the area you wish to capture and then let go of the mouse button. In most cases the new screen shot you just did, should show up on your Mac Desktop.

Please send that screenshot image of your LIST view to our development team (with your URL in the Subject) back via the collaborative.

note -- By doing so, you have now given us both the names of your pages and the initial content we will be able to resolve to. AdVision will now take your text content and format it into HTML code, so that the font styles we are using within the web store will be consistent throughout.

photographs -- You may very well wish to have an image or two added to your static pages. Don't try and add them yourself, but send them to us (via our collaborative environment or FTP to us) with your LIST view screenshot. Please make sure to let us know what images go to what pages and if you have a particular order or comment about placement.
